Starter Strip and Drip Edge Installation in Bala Cynwyd, PA

Starter Strip and Drip Edge Installation in Bala Cynwyd, PA

The first course of shingles on a roof is the one wind attacks first. A starter strip, a row of shingles or purpose-made strip with sealant along the eave, glues that first course down. Without it, the bottom row has nothing to seal to and lifts in the first strong gust.

Drip edge is the bent metal at the eaves and rakes. It carries water off the shingle edge into the gutter instead of letting it curl back onto the fascia and roof deck. Many older roofs were built without it.

Bala Cynwyd, PA Shingle Roof Repair connects homeowners in Bala Cynwyd, PA with shingle roof repair crews who add or replace both. The work typically includes:

• Lifting the first two courses of shingles
• Installing drip edge under the underlayment at the eaves and over it at the rakes
• Adding a sealed starter strip with a small overhang past the drip edge
• Re-laying and sealing the first courses

Signs you need it: rotted fascia boards, stains on the soffit, or shingles along the eave that flap or have blown off while the rest of the roof is fine.
