Algae Streak Treatment for Shingle Roofs in Bala Cynwyd, PA

Algae Streak Treatment for Shingle Roofs in Bala Cynwyd, PA

Those black or dark green streaks running down a shingle roof are usually Gloeocapsa magma, a blue-green algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It thrives in humid climates and on shaded, north-facing slopes. It does not cause leaks by itself, but it holds moisture and it makes a sound roof look old.

Bala Cynwyd, PA Shingle Roof Repair connects homeowners in Bala Cynwyd, PA with shingle roofing contractors who treat algae without damaging the shingles. That rules out pressure washing, which strips granules off the asphalt.

A typical treatment:

• Low-pressure application of a cleaning solution approved by the shingle manufacturer
• Rinsing at garden-hose pressure from the top down
• Protecting plants and gutters from runoff
• Installing zinc or copper strips just below the ridge, which release ions with each rain to slow regrowth

If you are planning repairs or a partial reroof anyway, ask about algae-resistant shingles, which have copper-coated granules mixed in.
